So let’s check out some bag in box wine packaging. I’ve selected 20 great looking boxed wines. Some are just designed in a great way. Some comes with a clever feature or design that make them stand out not only with how they look. But before we begin I should clarify a few things about bag in box wine.
What is Bag in Box Packaging
Bag in box packaging or BiB is simply a plastic bag with a tap that lets you pour as much wine as you want. It was introduced in the market in the 1960’s. The bag is usually placed in a box to make it easier to use, store and transport, thus the name bag in box.
The advantage to a box over a bottle is that the wine inside the bag never gets in contact with air. This means the wine won’t oxidize like a bottle of wine if it’s left opened. The downside is that it does let in a little air over time which means it will eventually oxidize. Normally boxed wines comes with a best before date stamped on it. A normal shelf life is between 6 months up to two years. Long enough if you want to have some wine at home for a party but too short if you want to store it.
Boxed wine can come in many sizes but the most common one is about 3 liters / 0.8 gallons. But there are plenty of boxed wines with both smaller and bigger sizes.
Isn’t it just for the bad wines?
Well, yes and no. The packaging itself has nothing to do with the quality of the wine. But often boxed wines are of a lower quality than bottled wines, but that has more to do with how the producer chooses to sell the wine than with the actual quality. The quality of boxed wine also varies between countries. In the US for example most of the boxed wine are of a low quality.
If you compare that to Sweden where boxed wine holds the majority of the wine market the quality is higher. Many mid-priced wines come in both boxes and bottles and the packaging is more seen as a convenience than a bad wine. But top quality wine is rarely or never sold in boxes so there are some truth to that boxes generally is of a lower quality.
