DS Smith double winner at the Oscar de l’Emballage 2017

DS Smith recently won awards in two of the five categories of the “Oscar de l’Emballage”: the folding carton G’Vine Grape Dots won the award in the Transformation category and the machine Combi 150R in the Production category.

The “Oscar de l’Emballage” ceremony rewards, each year, innovation in functionalities and technical know-how. It provides  recognition within the dynamism of the  packaging sector and is organised by Infopro Digital, the editor of Emballages Magazine. This year’s 62nd edition of the awards, led by Henri Saporta, chief editor of Emballages Magazine, was held in front of 330 people who gathered together in Paris at the Elysées Biarritz on November 27th.

Over 100 applications were analysed by a jury of professionals from the sectors of packaging and conditioning. In order to classify the nominated products, five categories are used: Consumption, Transformation, Production, Environment and Promising.

In the Transformation category, the jury selected the folding G’Vine Grape Dots box. This product was created for the “Maison” Villevert (Gin). It elegantly underlines the refined brand image with, on the top of the folding carton, selective varnish on the logo and, on the front face, in reference to the unique process of distillation of the G’Vine Floraison, a bunch of grapes. Drawn by the agency 5.5, the folding carton can be personalised thanks to pre-cut holes on two of its sides, allowing the consumer to transform it into a unique creation! In order to guarantee the best protection of the bottle, the folding carton has been conceived in the shape of a bell with a smart locking system.

In the Production category, the jury selected the new machine Combi 150R created by DS Smith Packaging Systems. Featuring one mandrel case former, one division inserter and one top sealer, the same machine can shape several different case formats. Customers can make boxes with 4, 6 or 8 sides – maximising the printable area for messaging – it can even create rounded corners. The machine can also produce shelf-ready open cases, such as those with a high back and low front, to better display products.

The judging panel also nominated the manual version of the Made2Fit solution in the Transformation category. Made2Fit allows e-retailers to adapt the size of the packaging to the product it contains. Designed for small series, Made2Fit manual offers 39 combinations of parcels sizes. Using this solution, the transporting of empty space is reduced to 80%, and potentially by 100% for certain products. Creating packaging that is the correct size allows us and our customers to reduce the operation and expedition costs. We gain stock space, we reduce labour costs and administration of orders, as well as decreasing the time needed for preparation and allowing for conditioning without additional inserts. It also reduces the amount products move during transit and so minimises the risks of damage.
